 The Mysterious Vendor
« Thread Started on Oct 11, 2007, 9:02am »

A cloaked and shaded High Elf lurks in a corner. Out of the veiw of anyone not looking for her. Her features are indistinguishable and she becons to no one.

She waits for her coriour to bring her precious cargo. If the untrained eye sees the open box of scrolls and books, they will think nothing more of it. But to the wizarding eye, these scrolls and books are priceless. It is rare to have a spell on paper, for when the student learns the incantation. The parchment will simply vanish from existance...

The Vendor does not yet have scrolls for sale.

Kaiten stepped into the marketplace, wrinkling his nose in disgust. He never liked the smell of so many people in a small area, they reminded him of his past. He continued to walk around, adjusting the strap of his knapsack, which held a bunch of scrolls.

He was hired to deliver pieces of paper to an elf wearing a cloak. 'As if he's the only elf wearing a cloak,' he thought sarcastically as he passed another cloaked elf. But the pay the client gave was good, and he was supposed to be paid by the other client, so he wasn't complaining, loudly anyway.

She was patient, her heart beat steadily but annoyance was not too far off the horizon. Everything was on time, she was even early. Her suppliers were usually predictable. Usually on time, if not early. She felt for the coin purse tied securly to her sash. Gold shifted inside. The metal was heavy, but an enchantment made it seem as if the bag was nearly empty.

She kept a weary eye, though she looked rather nonchalant and did not seem to draw attention from the croud around her. Long slender fingers moved silver hair back behind her long ears. It was covering her eyes.

The High Elf spotted an uncomfortable-looking being. Only looking slightly in discomfort however, the stranger hid it well. She senced this might be the person she was waiting for. The vendor did nothing to attract attention to herself, she stayed in the shadows. If the being knew, and others of the marketplace for that matter, understood what was on those scrolls, she may never get to feel the smooth parchment in her hands. Better yet, more gold to ever clank in her coin purse. No, eye contact is all that was needed. An unspoken becon for get the deeds done.

Patience was never one of Kaiten's best virtues, as he was starting to get annoyed with his situation. All he needed to do was deliver a bunch of scrolls to an elf wearing a cloak, how hard could that be? 'How hard could that be?' he asked himself, resisting the urge to scoff at his situation.

Running his fingers through his messy hair, as if trying to make it lie flat, he continued his search for the elusive cloaked elf. His light grey eyes filled with annoyance scanned the whole marketplace, hoping to at least make eye contact with the elf.

As he was about to turn towards the main streets of the marketplace, he saw a pair of eyes staring intently at him. 'Maybe, it's him,' he thought excitedly as he placed his trademark smile and walked towards the elf hidden in the shadows.

If she had something to tap her fingers on in slight annoyance, she would. She watched the man that seemed to be carrying her cargo search for her with no avail. But still it was not long before her green eyes met his and felt relieved when he flashed a sly smile.

She still stood in the shadows and waited for the man to come to her. Slender fingers coiled around the leather coin purse once more. Half to get ready to pay the man and half because she gained confort in knowning the coin purse was still there.

She took only one step to greet the man. "Searching for a 'cloaked elf'?" She said in all seriousness her eyes, searched the sachel the man carried.

As he approached the elf he has been searching for the whole time, he subconsciously held on to his knapsack tighter. If this was the wrong one, at least his bag wouldn't be stolen.

When the cloaked elf took a step forward and greeted him, a flicker of shock ran past through his eyes. 'I've been looking for a lady elf?' he thought in surprise before he was back in control over his emotions.

'What a warm greeting,' popped another thought into his head after the elf spoke to him in a soft yet cold voice. "Are you the elusive cloaked elf, madam?" he asked politely, almost like a gentleman in response to her question.

Slightly taken aback by the man's gentalmen-like ways, the rogue's expression grew soft. Lowering her hood which hid her silvery hair she spoke with much more emotion then before.

"Yes, I am the elf you are looking for." Her gaze fell on his pack. "You have something for me?"

From his sly business-y trademark smile he uses on his clients, the smile on Kaiten's face changed to a charming one he uses when he's around women. Needless to say, Kaiten was quite pleased to see that the lady elf's expression became softer when he spoke to her in a gentlemanly manner.

Following her gaze as she asked a question, his eyes landed on the knapsack slung on his right shoulder for a moment. Looking straight back at her face with his smile in place, he gripped the knapsack tighter with his right arm while he placed his left hand into his pant pocket.

"Yes, madam. I do have something for you," he replied when he opened his knapsack and pulled out a box inscribed with runes all around. "Is this the item you were to claim, madam?" he asked politely holding out the box with both his hands.

Her eyes stared down at the box that Kaiten held out to her. She spoke rather to herself but loud enough for her company to hear. "They're getting fancier every time. When I first started dealing with these merchants the products were bound in dirty cotton cloth." She took the runed box, said a few words under her breath that seemed like Old Elvish and the latch unlocked itself. She opened the box to check to see if she was really receiving scrolls. Sure enough, the merchandice was all there.

She smiled a rather alluring smile to the simple power of the scrolls that were nicely sealed with metallic wax of different colors. The elf closed the box.

"Thank you." She said as she looked up. "You require payment."

Her hand fell to her leather coin purse bound to her belt that also held a very well-crafted silver three-foot blade in place.

"I think 100 gold is worth your trouble." She let the small flat gold rounds stamped with the symbol ± on one side fall from her hand to his. "Oh, and for that charming smile..." She opened the runed box and pulled out a peice of folded parchment sealed with a metallic green wax. "It's Shrink. A rarer spell. You may keep it for yourself or sell it. But do not open it until you're sure. For once you read and learn what is on the parchment, it will turn to dust."

Kai wondered through the market aimlessly, staring at the people who passed her by. There were plenty of humans, but other creatures as well; dwarfs, ogres, elves, and mages. She stared at them curiously, her face blank. She was tired and hungry and needed a bath. She stopped at a food vendor's stall and stared at the food for sale. The vendor eyed her suspiciously. /He thinks I am going to steal./ She thought. /The idea doesn't sound to bad./ She walked on as if she were not interested but one of her vectors grabbed hold of a small roasted chicken set out on the booth and brought it up to Kai for her to see. The vendor was to busy with a goose merchant to realize the chicken was gone.
Kai smiled, holding the chicken close to her. /Finally I get something to eat./ She walked along the market, her vectors sliding over every stall and every food, examining every person that passed Kai by. She found a dark alley in between a tavern and a weapon shop and decided this place would do for now. She walked down it calmly, the brightness of the day fading away into the background as the sun was blocked out by the alley's dark balconees. Kai sat down under a large balconee with a riped purple curtain some twenty feet high and picked at the chicken vigorously. She hadn't had anything as good as this to eat in so long.

Kai ate the chicken slowly, making the most of it before it was gone. She had chosen a small one and wished she had chosen a larger one. She stood and walked back out of the alley, wiping her mouth on her arm. She wandered the crowd in search of anything interesting to do.
