Fallen branches cracked in two as heavy hooves crushed them, their owner completely ignorant of the damage he was doing. Sunlight barely made it through the thick canopy of the trees above, casting strange shapes on the beast's back. On the leaf strewn ground below, itty bitty creatures scattered here and there stared up in fright at the manhorse above, scuttling away when a black leg came close. The centaur was hungry, just short of starving. He had been in his underground hut for quite some time after a tree had fallen over the entrance. Although another entrance had been added in another place, but it had been almost two years since Hurley had traveled that route, and he wasn't as familiar with its maze of ways as he had once been. Being stranded for over a week, it was right that Hurley should be famished, and now he was out searching for food. Of course, he naturally had grass that had grown from his walls, but that miniscule amount was not enough for his large size.
Hurley held his bow and arrow steady, ready for any dinner food to walk by unknowingly. Although he wasn't exactly quiet, nor great for hunting, many a beasts had walked right into his clutches before, ignorant of the jeopardy their life was in. At the softest sound, Hurley could locate the creator and shoot it within seconds. Amazing yes, and seemingly impossible, but understand that Hurley is a centaur, having extremely sensitive senses.
Hurlecus stopped, turning his head south and keeping very still. His brown eyes squinted as he listened. After almost a minute, Hurley was sure that he was on the trail of a large animal. Small enough to be taken down easily, of course, but larger than, say, a bunny. Charging forward with a sudden burst of speed, Hurley gained ground fast, leaping over several fallen logs along the way. His red coat glistened as he burst through the trees into a sunny meadow, catching a glimpse of his victim. As the meadow was quite large, and the creature only halfway across, Hurley took his chances with the shot. Raising his bow, he aimed, pulled back the arrow, and let go. The wood whistled through the air, hitting its target with a soft psht. Hurley saw the beast yelp then fell to the ground with a surprisingly loud thump. The centaur slowed to a trot and came upon the animal, bending down to pull up the young deer. He was only a little saddened that he had killed a fellow hooved animal, but glad that he now had dinner.
Tossing the food on his back, he turned began to head toward the trees, to return home, when he saw just how lovely the meadow was. Pulling the deer from his back, he chucked it to the ground, memorizing the spot so that he could come back to it later, to take it home. Glancing around, he saw that the meadow was about two square miles, with a sparkling pond near the middle. Setting aside his bow, he charged forward, clearly having been deprived of open spaces such as this without fear of death in a long time. Reaching the pond, he splashed on through, soaking his body and spraying all 'round with the cool water. Bending over, he drank from the liquid, quenching his thirst. Then, after cooling his parched throat, he stepped form the spring, shaking his body then gazing around. He was quite unfamiliar with this part of the forest.
